Home Decor 101 – I was recently interviewed and asked to share my 101 decorating tips and I thought it would be fun to share my answers with you here on the blog. Each of these interior decorating questions could be answered properly in its own blog post, but I’ve tried to answer each question in a nutshell. If you’re looking for quick tips and tricks to decorate your home, this post is for you!
Paint is always my first solution to any budget decorating problem! However, the fastest, easiest and most cost-effective way to change a room is to change the walls. Paint, wallpaper and/or molding can instantly transform any space. In the photos below I show how I transformed my bedroom walls with wallpaper and paint in one weekend. Home Decor 101
This year we see a lot of whimsical colors, rich velvets and older stoneware presented on a white background. Warm wood textures are added to rooms with flat accent walls and built-in wardrobes and doors. The “grandma’s cottage” trend is also continued by the fluted design. While I continue to love a neutral color palette, I love the warmth of new trends and recently added a beautiful green color to my kitchen island and a warm wood beam in: Tutorial on a beautiful DIY wood beam room divider.

To make the room feel larger, I recommend lighting the room with color and layering the furniture with a sofa of a suitable size. Also, don’t forget to hang the curtain rod at floor level to create the illusion of high ceilings.
Knowing your own decorating style, creating a cohesive sense of harmony and balance throughout your home, and knowing how to create focal points in each room are the basics of good decorating. There is a lot to unpack in these three concepts, but in short, creating beautiful spaces is all about matching each decor element to the larger whole. If you believe in one decorating style, even an eclectic style, it’s easy to create spaces that are calm, harmonious, and cohesive.
My style is close to a French provincial farmhouse. I have many beautiful and elegant pieces that I can easily mix and match with furniture in different parts of my rooms and mix and match at home and even outside. I chose items that repeat, are harmonious and balanced to help bring the home together and feel cohesive.
If a complete room makeover isn’t in the budget, update the space with paint, peel-and-stick flooring or walls, and updated upholstered furniture. My childhood bathroom was a place I wanted to drink; However, the renovation of the bathroom is not in the budget. Instead, I transformed their bathroom with peel-and-stick wallpaper, paint, and a new addition: the boho farmhouse bathtub.
Decor Styles 101: Japandi
I’m seeing a lot of deep, rich, earthy color palettes right now. Paint companies change their recommended color palettes several times a year, so it’s best to decorate with what you like, not what’s currently recommended as the trending color of the season.
I always have hedge scissors so I can trim the foliage for a table centerpiece for free! By adding fresh leaves to an ice bucket or vintage vase, you can freshen up your table in less than five minutes.
A beautiful home sets the scene for memories, nourishes and renews our soul, and serves as the backdrop to our lives as the protagonist! Everyone’s home should be filled with things that bring joy. I believe that the home should be a place that nurtures and renews the inner spirit.

I want to say up front that this theme is not just for couples. It can apply to roommates, extended families or even anyone living together at home. Forgive me if I sound like I’m only talking about childless couples, but that’s because I live in one, okay? Maybe you have a really cocky eight-year-old. I understand it.
Furniture Selection 101: How To Choose The Right Pieces For Your Home
So first a little background on my decorating experience with my husband Jeremy. This summer we started the renovation and furnishing of our third shared home. He is a guy who cares about beauty. I can make ten great picks in a row and he’ll be happy with them all, but on the eleventh he suddenly picks up a very strong opinion and usually seems to come out of nowhere. It keeps me on my toes.
He has very good taste and I love him. But his range of things he likes is much, much, much smaller than mine. In fact, it is similar with our taste in clothes. She would happily wear a J.Crew plaid shirt every day for the rest of her life. To mix it up, she wears gingham. Me, no way. I love J.Crew, but I also love about 1,000 other stores and styles, and I always want to mix it up. So we are different.

It’s the best thing we’ve done for both of us to simplify the process of choosing a common style and creating a mood board and developing a shared vision. Our process started with talking about the places we visited, the hotels and cafes that impressed us. Then we looked at my extra personal board that I created. I asked Jeremy to pick out all the things he liked (and took notes).

All you need is some inspirational photos you like and a place to use as a reference for the vibe you’re after! Once that’s in place, the choice of colors you like, wood stains, metals for hardware and accessories, and trends you want to embrace or skip is customized ahead.
After some conversation and looking at some pictures, we decided on a theme. It was not difficult. Honestly, it just came naturally. Now, whether we’re buying a countertop, tiles or a new sofa, we have a unified vision. It really made the process easier for us!
It is important that you represent each member of your family/family in your decorations. The best way to do this is to imagine how the house would look like if everyone had 100% their own style, and then mix and match the different elements.
